NOTES:
- The search techniques above may be used to find databases
(e.g. containing plant or animal species).
- Simply click on one of the icons above (Altavista/Google is automatically opened and the
search string inserted in the search box).
- Replace "keyword" at the end of the search
string in Altavista's search box (or at the beginning in Google) with your own
term in lower case.
- In Google, leave the quotation marks (" ") in
place.
- Your keyword
must be the actual term that you are looking for. In the case of species, your keyword may
be either the common name or the scientific name (e.g. bottle-nosed dolphin / tursiops
truncatus). Then hit Search.
- In Altavista, leave "Language:" set to "any
language".
- To increase
your results
A) Check your spelling!
B) Use lower case in order to be sure to find all possible variants;
C) Break down your search phrase into separate words:
tursiops NEAR truncatus (instead of tursiops
truncatus)
- To
limit/finetune your results:
A) If you are obtaining
TOO many pages from the same site, select "One result per Web site" in
Altavista;
B) Set "Language:" in Altavista to the language of
your search criteria;
C) Add another keyword relating to the field in question using AND. Example: ...
spinner AND dolphin*
- If the search criteria in one language fail, try using search
criteria in another language (beginning with English!).
- Once you have opened a page, locate your term with CTRL+F (or
Edit/Find).
- To find TRANSLATIONS
of scientific terms (e.g. Italian translation of English great crested grebe):
Search for your SOURCE language term (great crested grebe). Once you have found
the scientific name (podiceps cristatus), either:
A) Search for the scientific term using search criteria in your TARGET language (here:
Italian), or
B) Change the language in Altavista to your TARGET language (here: Italian) and search for
the scientific term (Finds: svasso maggiore).
