Exercise 2 - Finding glossaries

Exercise 3 - Finding glossaries

ANSWER: Use English or German glossary search interfaces.

In Altavista, replace "keyword" with: (outperformer OR out-performer)

In Google, run separate searches for different spellings to avoid exceeding Google's 10-word limit.

Exercise 4 - Finding abbreviations

ANSWER: Use the English glossary search interface or abbreviation search interface with search criteria UNHCR (or U.N.H.C.R. if you get no results). In Google use quotation marks to indicate the exact phrase "U.N.H.C.R.", otherwise the letters might be considered separately.

Exercise 5 - Finding the missing word

ANSWER: Search criteria: "in accordance * the new regulations"

NOTES: 1) Quotation marks for the phrase, one "*" for one missing word.
Finds: in accordance with the new regulations
2) To broaden your search, replace "new" with "*" ("in accordance * the * regulations"). This will find for example: => in accordance with the previous regulations, in accordance with the financial regulations

Exercise 6 - Finding parallel texts

ANSWER: Altavista EN-DE technique "SL in URL & link to TL". Replace "keyword" with "euro-area member state*"
 
NOTES: 1) Letter wildcard "*" to cover singular and plural;
2) Lower case to cover all combinations of upper and lower case (euro-area Member State(s), Euro-area Member State(s), Euro-Area Member State(s) etc.)

(if you use the Google search interfaces, remember that Google does not allow the letter wildcard "*" so to search for singular and plural you will have to run separate searches and is not case sensitive)

Change EN to DE in the URL to get the same page in German.

This page may also be found by going directly to the EU's website (http://europe.eu.int/) and using the site's own search engine since we know that most of the EU's documentation exists in both languages.

4) Change the language to German in the URL (or click on the language link) and locate the German equivalent: To find the corresponding location in the target text, search for key figures or abbreviations which are bound to remain the same and check the page number and the scroll bar position on the right.
