143-Gnosca: Artificial Satellites

The artificial satellites were imaged in the years 1997-2001. I intensively collabored with Bruno Tilgner a french satellite enthousiast.. Now the asteroid 21650 carries his name.

The january 10th 1998 the seven ASTRA geostationary satellites were imaged from Gnosca with the C8 telescope. The animation of their movement is here . I produced also a still image that was published in the may issue of 1998 of Sky and Telescope magazine.

From february 3rd to 21st 1998 a prolonged serial of clear nights allowed the capture of the movement of the ASTRA satellites. These images are here. Bruno Tilgner and me wrote an article on the Sterne und Weltraum magazine reporting our observations on these very interesting man-made object.

The april 8th 2000 from Gnosca was captured the image of the satellite XMM-Newton. It was the first sighting from an european observatory.

The february 26th 2001 I tried to capture all the geostationary satellites above the sky of Gnosca. The image was done with the Baker-Schmidt camera.

Other images showing the beauty of the traces of these objects are in this image gallery.

The Gravity Probe B satellite is doing a fascinating and deep interesting physics experiment on the general theory of Einstein. The satellite, launched the april 20th 2004, transits periodically above the Gnosca sky. Some pictures showing the trace of the satellite are visible in my image gallery. In the July issue of the magazine Sky and Telescope was published the picture of GP-B taken in Gnosca.

The Rosetta probe of ESA was imaged during his approach to the Earth. in the night of march 2nd 2005. This movie shows this flyby.

The satellite Giove-A, first exponent of the european fleet for the developing of the GPS system was captured above Gnosca the january 8th 2006. This picture shows the faint trace of the satellite at the distance of 23’000km.
